Species: Foeniculum vulgare
Plant Family:

Apiaceae (Umbelliferae).

Origins:

Found the throughout Europe but particularly Mediterranean countries such as Greece, France and Italy. It seems to prefer growing by the sea.

Extraction:

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the crushed Fennel seeds.

Fennel is (in milder climates) a perennial plant that grows to between 4 & 6 feet high. The seeds from which the oil is obtained should be harvested once they have reached a light brown colour and before they have fallen from the plant. They’re normally harvested in the early morning so as to avoid too many dropping to the ground during the process. They are then dried before processed to produce the oil.

Properties:

Antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diuretic, galactagogue, emmenagogue, laxative, antimicrobial and tonic.

Usage & methods of application:

Aromatherapists will often use Fennel in massage blends to be used on bruised, dull, oily and mature skin. It's also used in cases of cellulitis, obesity and rheumatism. It can also be used in a massage around the bowel and intestine area to ease colic, constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence and nausea.

When burned or vaporised it's used in cases of asthma and bronchitis and as an appetite stimulant for those with some eating disorders. It's also used to boost courage and mental strength.

Blends well with:

You may find that Fennel blends particularly well with Lavender, Geranium, Sandalwood, Rose, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Pine and the Citrus Oils.
