The flowers are steam distilled as quickly as possible after harvesting to produce the essential oil.
The Ylang Ylang tree is a small tropical tree which grows very quickly. It can grow up to 15 feet per year and reaches a maximum height of 40 foot. It’s mainly harvested between April and June and then again between September and October. The flowers of the tree are picked in the early morning and great care must be taken not to damage the fragile flowers as one bad flower can affect the whole batch.
Aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antiseptic, euphoric, hypotensive, sedative, stimulant and tonic.
When blended for massage Ylang Ylang is often found in preparations used to treat high blood pressure, tachycardia, unusually fast breathing and palpitations. It's also a calming and uplifting oil so is often found in blends to relieve depression, insomnia, nervous tension and stress related problems.
It's also commonly used as an ingredient in sensual blends designed for home use. A romantic oil which is a natural aphrodisiac and is also thought to discourage frigidity and assist in the relief of impotence.
In a cream or lotion it is used to alleviate oily, irritated skin, insect bites and stings, acne and is regarded as a good general skin tonic.
When burned or vaporised it is again used to set a romantic mood and also to alleviate depression and fatigue.
You may find that Ylang Ylang blends especially well with Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lavender and Sandalwood.
