What is Taurine?
Taurine is a metabolite of the amino acid L-cysteine. Naturally occurring in the brain, retina, muscle, and heart, taurine is essential for infants for proper brain and retinal development. Interestingly, taurine is also essential and very important for cats.
Taurine is abundant in seaweed, meat and animal source foods, excluding milk products. Vegetarians who do not consume meat should consider a supplement. Taurine is especially important for women who plan on having children.
Health Benefits:
In animal studies, taurine has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and to reduce insulin dependence in diabetics. More studies need to be conducted to determine if these benefits apply to humans.
Taurine has also been identified as being helpful to individuals with congestive heart failure. Taurine may have antioxidant and detoxifying properties. Studies have also shown that taurine may help lower blood pressure in those with hypertension, and may help treat symptoms of cystic fibrosis.
Usage Indications:
Use as directed. General recommended dosage varies: 500-3000mg daily.
Taurine is available in caplet, tablet and powder form
