Also known as: Eyebright. Uses: Conjunctivitis, eye strain, hayfever, inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), irritated and itchy eyes. Description: Euphrasia is a small annual plant, native to Britain and Europe. It grows to a height of about 30cm and bears pale lilac flowers. It has been used as far back as the 17th Century for healthcare. Milton, in his poem Paradise Lost, describes how the Archangel Michael used Euphrasy to clear Adam’s sight. How it works: Euphrasia contains a number of active constituents which work as anti-inflammatory agents, helping to dry up secretions of the mucous membranes. This is particularly relevant when we consider the most important role of Euphrasia — to reduce the inflammation of the delicate mucous membranes of the eyes (conjunctivitis) when they are afflicted by infections or allergy (hayfever). The preparation should be taken internally, as it will be delivered to the eyes via the bloodstream. 50ml
