Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of the 3 amino acids glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. Glutathione is critical to the formation of the important antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase and has antioxidant properties in it's own right. It is one of the enzymes present in the liver that are involved in the detoxification of many harmful substances such as alcohol. Glutathione is commonly used in the detoxification of heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium. Glutathione is found in very high concentrations in the lens of the eye where it plays a vital role in maintaining healthy eyesight.
