Uric acid is the waste product formed from the breakdown of food and protein in the blood. The normal, healthy range of uric acid in blood plasma is regarded by medical professionals as between 3.6 mg/dL (~214µmol/L) and 8.3 mg/dL (~494µmol/L). Should uric acid levels build up in the blood, typically beyond the normal, healthy range, it can form into needle-like crystals of sodium urate, which may cause inflammation, severe pain and swelling, often in the big toe and other joints (known as Gout)
Cherries have been shown by various scientific studies, to help maintain uric acid levels at normal, healthy levels (see research links below). However, many practitioners and consumers are only too familiar with the fact that sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) are considerably less effective than the ruby-red, Montmorency tart cherry variety (Prunus cerasus L.). Montmorency cherries are considerably richer in anthocyanins (giving them their bright red hue), which are likely to be the key components within this variety of cherry that helps its effectiveness in maintaining uric acid at healthy levels.

Melatonin is a hormone manufactured in the pineal gland (located in the middle of the brain), and is considered the great regulator of our internal clock. It is thought to be responsible for maintaining the circadian rhythms (natural sleep/wake cycle) within the body.
Montmorency cherries are a rich source of anthocyanins and other phenolic and flavonoid compounds, such as quercetin, known to possess powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other health-promoting properties, that may help protect and maintain your long-term cardiovascular health (please refer to supporting research below).
